History of the Vernon

As a society, we've served Stockport and its surrounding areas since 1924 and we take pride in our history. Please find a timeline below of some of our society's key events, all leading up to the Vernon we are today.

1924

  • The year we are founded.
  • Lord Vernon (George John Warren) donates land which becomes Vernon Park, named after him of course.
  • We are given the name Vernon due to the local connections to other long-standing established landmarks in Stockport such as Vernon Park and Vernon Mill, and because it did not conflict with the names of the other 12 building societies in town!

1939

  • We have grown vastly in size and our assets now exceed those of other local building societies.

1971

  • We open our first branch in Poynton, shortly followed by opening a branch in Romiley.

1977

  • An opportunity for new a premises at 17 St Petersgate arises and we open our new head office in the centre of Stockport.

1979

  • We opened our Hazel Grove branch.

1981

  • We opened our Reddish branch.

1985

  • We opened our Bramhall branch, shortly followed by our Edgley branch.

1988

  • Our continued growth called for an even better, purpose-built Head Office Building which is built across the road from the then current one, replacing the Beehive pub at 19 St Petersgate.
  • All staff were relocated here, and more efficient computer systems were installed.
  • Being as innovative as we can, we come up with an open-plan banking hall to create a friendlier environment for all our members.

1993

  • Due to the continued growth of the Society, the Head Office building was extended to incorporate a larger Banking Hall and office space.

1995

  • We opened our Marple branch.

2019

  • To bring the Society into the modern era we rebrand the society and to this day we continue to be Stockport’s Choice for Mortgages and Savings.

2021

  • Without taking excessive risks, the Society has continued to grow and assets now exceed £350 million.
  • Of the 13 Societies founded in the town, the Vernon Building Society is the only local Building Society still serving the Stockport area.
